26/03/2017 at Llia valley

It has been ten years since I have had a systematic look at the Llia valley breeding Snipe population, so I took the chance on Sunday night (26th) to repeat a car based survey using GPS to pinpoint listening points for drumming and/or chipping birds. Birds were heard on SN9219 (Maen Llia, at least 3 drumming) and SN9218 (2 drumming plus another chipping) but none were heard on SN9217 or SN9216 which have held single drummers previously. The counts at the first two sites were very similar to the counts I made in April 2006 and June 2007 and birds on the latter two squares may have been difficult to pick up due to the strong breeze and the increased noise from the river which runs close to the road there. A small falcon, almost certainly a Merlin was seen at 20:14, when light was so poor that plumage details could not be discerned despite it perching briefly at 10 metres range.

25/03/2017 at Llangorse lake

Fairly sure there was an osprey at Llangorse lake Saturday afternoon. I was about 4-500m away out on the water but not much else flies like one, great lolloping wing beats, not a GBB gull. Lapwings, kingfisher (near the island), chiffchaffs heard and loads of interesting ducks that I am not so good at identifying!

Finally excited to confirm today my partner's sighting over last couple of days of what he thought was a Hawfinch. Indeed it is - on the patio feeding on spilled sunflower hearts 5ft from the window !! Clearly it has been in the vicinity for at least 3 days now - a first for our garden.

It is hoped that the vast majority of images lost from the gallery due to a server failure in February have now been restored, however in doing so it appears that the wrong captions are now with a minority of images, or wrong images with captions. This is probably because the images have been uploaded in the last couple of weeks have the same filenames as ones recovered that were uploaded further back in the past. It should only have effected images uploaded in the last couple of weeks as behind the scenes there will effectively be 2 database records pointing to the same photo. If any of your photo's are affected and you would like them corrected please contact us to delete the image on the gallery then re-upload your images. From now on when you upload a new image, the system will check for a conflict and rename the image if necessary. We hope that makes sense and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. Thank you.

Heard G.S.Woodpecker drumming outside house this morning . Bird on wooden electricity pole , but drumming on plastic / metal box halfway up it , which amplified the sound ! Fascinating to watch it drum , then stop and listen for a reply before having another go .
