Just had a coversation with a chap from Rare bird alert as to what to do regarding this bird. The pics from this morning almost confirm its a Lesser Scaup so hes put the news out as a probably Lesser Scaup. So obviously keep any pics you take of the bird for ID purposes. It might not be all that easy to get past the BBRC and WRP.

The 'scaup' type duck was in front of the hide not long after Marks sighting but went back over the carpark area by 10:10 with a load of coot but flew back over towards the hide at 10:25. Got some more photos so an ID should be possible? Also over at the hide was 4 water rail and 1 Cetti' Warbler both heard and 2 kingfisher.

Luke's 'Scaup' still on the lake in front of the car park reed bed.

I too visited the Sewage Works in the rain, missed the Blackcap but saw a Chiffchaff. There was a Kingfisher on the Canal behind Morrison's petrol - the river must be much too rough for fishing. One of the swans has a ring on the right leg but I could not read it.

Single male Blackcap and a couple of Goldcrest at Sewage Treatment Works. 34 feeding Redwing nearby and 2 Mute Swan on Canal. At 16.15 a huge single flock of 8,000+ Starling heading down Usk at Brecon toward Llangorse Lake.

I gain some relief with Luke's estimate of 25,000 Starling from Saturday. It will obviously never be a precise science, but I estimated 27,500 on 3rd Nov in the whirring squadrons arriving from the N & NW. I believe very few arrive over Bwlch/Cathedine (from S/SE)but it would be good to hear from a resident there.

Cettis Warbler quite vocal to the right of Bird hide, similarly Water Rail in front of hide. Bittern seen in flight in front of the hide and a Kingfisher diving from a Sycamore tree overhanging the lake near the Scots pine.

25,000 was a cautious estimate. I only saw the birds coming from the other side of the lake. So could be alot more than 25,000.

65 - 70 Tufted Duck off Llangasty and a goof few more at west end of lake. Judging by the Starlings streaming in a) across the lake from Llangorse, b) round the lake over the hide, and c) "inland" over Ty Mawr, 25 000 could well be an underestimate by Luke. Do they also stream in from the south ?
