Female Goosander with 20+ chicks seen swimming by Llanfaes bridge in Brecon. Mother made valiant efforts to ward off heron that was lurking around.

Who was watching who, Andrew. Any possibility that the Cuckoos had spotted another "predator" looking for nests and made good use of the sighting ?

Entry added by: Maria Goddard on Tue 26th May 09, 01:06pm Sighting location: Clyron Bridge, Hay-on-Wye. Sighting date: 26-5-09
After almost being washed away during last weeks heavy rain the swans nesting by Hay bridge are parents at last! 3 cygnets spotted Tuesday lunchtime. Lovely.

Entry added by: Andrew King on Mon 25th May 09, 11:10pm Sighting location: MOD Epynt FIBUA/Cilieni area. Sighting date: 25th May 2009
40 species. Best were Wheatear, 3 terrs Whinchat, 1pr stonechat, 6 male Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Bullfinch, 6 TPipit, Yellowhammer, 2 male Reed Bunting. Resident woodland species scarse. Just off the tetrad at G Range, fascinating to watch a pair of Cuckoo winding up the local pipits. They shuffled down overhead wires waiting for an agitated Pipit to show itself, the female Cuckoo then dropping to the ground to search for its nest. Good timing as earlier I had found a couple of nests with full complement of eggs.

Be warned that an 8-figure grid reference like SO23052480 will cause your message to be lost somewhere in the aether; it seems it has to be a 6-figure GR eg. SO230248. I needed a better GR to indicate the correct side of the road (it could be the county boundary perhaps). Another example would be where you want to indicate the correct 10kmsq where a site is very close to the boundary yet don't want to indicate a Dipper 90m inside the middle of a block of dense forestry. I suppose you could go 500m upstream for example until the correct side of the river and one is not inside forestry !

Many thanks to LRS for confirming the Osprey. That quality record has now been overtaken by a Long-tailed Blue butterfly that was brought in to a house (Devynnog) on clothing by my cousin, Peter Jeffreys. I have photographed this rare migrant and I am 99% sure of the identity (the underwing is distinctive and it has intact fine tails), but so far my efforts to contact experts have failed. There is a large influx (Birdguides) of Painted Ladies (and seen at 2 sites in the west of Brecs) on the south coast so it may have come in with these. I will hold on to the butterfly for 24 hours so others can see it if they so wish.
