Sighting location: Bird Hide, Talybont reservoir. Sighting date: 2/12/09
Bird hide at Talybont reservoir. I have read John Harper's comments (see below) with interest. Having visited the hide on Sunday, I discovered I would have been drier had I swum in the reservoir to find the GN Diver! However, there is possibly good news on the way. Talybont Community Council in partnership with the Park Society, the Park Authority and others is submitting a grant application to carry out a number of environmental improvements to the area around the reservoir and also at Blaen y Glyn. Part of the bid includes maintenance of the hide plus some bird ID panels inside. Nothing is certain about the award of a grant, and we are seeking the moral support of BWT as well. I can promise John, that should we be lucky, then the roof will be repaired and other improvements made. Perhaps John, you could email me via Andrew King who knows my address and I will keep you informed of progress? Many thanks indeed for your comments, and also to everyone else who make this site so interesting. Peter.

Sighting location: Forest by Pont y Llwyn SO01N. Sighting date: 02/12/09
11 Blue Tit; 7 Long-tailed Tit; 3 Coal Tit;
1 Marsh Tit; 1 Tree Creeper; and no less than 7 Goldcrest - maybe more. . . . . . . . Ref a query by Andrew some weeks ago about Goldcrest numbers - I have seen and heard quite a few in the last few weeks. This may be because there's been a winter influx from the Continent and / or maybe they are just much more vocal this time of year in the tit parties - Long-tailed Tits likewise. . . . . . What does seem in short supply are Nuthatches ! Where are they ?. . . . . . [ in failing light: 1 male and 3 redhead Goosander a bit further down the valley on Pentwyn / Taf Fechan Resr.]

Sighting location: Behind hide, Talybont Resr.. Sighting date: 02/12/09
As it was drier outside the hide I watched a tit party for some time, particularly 27+ Long-tailed ones. I find the only way to count these with any degree of accuracy is to position oneself just ahead of the moving tit party and then count them as they fly across a convenient gap in the trees - neck-breaking when looking at the tops of tall larches on an upslope. Accompanying them were only about 15 Blue Tits and 3 Goldcrests. No Great Tits; and no Coal Tits apparent.

Sighting location: Talybont Resr Hide. Sighting date: 02/12/09
Will I never remember everything I meant to say ? Re the hide: the leaking roof, over several years, is now encouraging fungal rot and frutification in the roof and floor, maybe elsewhere. The skeletal structure is substantially strong - what a pity to top it off with a cheap and poor quality roof - particularly as the hide is in a superb position. Serious pity about the inpracticable viewing geometry.

Sighting location: Talybont Resr Hide. Sighting date: 02/12/09
Soaking, dripping state inside hide (getting worse over the years I've been there) made observation from there miserable so only a few duck, Cormorant and Goosander were noticed. If it is a public / BBNP / county council hide, then surely a few ££ could be found for a roll or two of good felt - I volunteer to put it on when the weather turns warmer. Oh, additionally, it seems to be designed solely for smaller people and the wheelchair bound. Six-footers have to contort old and weary bones and joints most uncomfortably to be able to see out - or is it only designed for angled scopes. I must remember to take a picnic chair if I go again and use the wheelchair viewing position, which also has a decent-sized porthole, or is this politically incorrect ?
