Also adult Yellow-legged gull on buoy. Keith pointed out a small Canada Goose which I now think looked like a 'Lesser' Canada Goose (parvipes)

One (Greater) Scaup, poor photos in Gallery. But this is not the more subtle bird which I saw on 7 and 8 Dec. I did not see last November's hybrid. The recent photos from Usk look to me like a straight Tufted Duck, an individual with more white on the face than is common.

Goldeneyes! I was already quite pleased to have scoped 66 in the middle of the lake when I picked out another bunch which brought the total to 93. Also 47 Pochard and a Scaup

Entry added by: Clive Micklewright on Thu 10th December 09, 10:00am Sighting location: lane alongside Pwll y wrach. Sighting date: 10/12/09
Very small hawks often fly in front of cars along Hospital Road past Pwll-y-wrach. Small birds feeding in the road seem to see the car coming but NOT the hawk in front of it. I have seen several "plucked" from the lane.

Last winters hybrid was thought to have some pochard in it which would explain the lack of white wingbar. which was one of the things that put lesser scaup into the frame. As andrew says, theres now way of figuring out what the is. so i tyhink Aythya hybrid is what it will remain.

Entry added by: Andrew King on Wed 9th December 09, 08:36pm Sighting location: Upper Penllanafal/My Troed. (SO158296) Sighting date: 09/12/09
Along the lane under Mynydd Troed, a nice flock of 30+ Yellowhammer, with similar number of Redwing. Ref the Tufted x Scaup debate - it is almost impossible to give a definite ID with these as they tend to show characters of both. Last years went down as 'Tufted hybrid'. I have not seen the current LLake bird.
