Even with Llangorse being 90%+ frozen still, WeBS Duck count today showed some good numbers - 375 Coot, 107 Mallard, 90 Wigeon, 80 Teal, 25 Goosander, 5 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 46 Goldeneye and 19 Pochard. Only GCGrebe (1) and Canada Geese (30) are much reduced. Heard at least three Cettis so they appeared to have survived. The Taverners Canada Goose was reported from Glasbury mid-am today - but by the time I got there it had gone!!. No sign of any Canadas or Bean Goose either as far down as Cabalva. Sum total of Mute Swans between Llangorse & Cabalva was 204.

Drake Wigeon was the first I have recorded at this site. 24 Mallard was my highest ever count here and 30+ Teal was about normal. As a result of the freeze Snipe numbers remain very low at c12 (c16 on the 31st Dec 09). Two Kestrels and a Barn Owl hunted at dusk.

There are now three Blackcap mini-territories in the garden. A well-established male takes seed, suet pellets and dried mealworms from a bird table at a front window, and guards it when he's not eating. Because a female near the back door was chasing off tits and finches coming to seed and peanut feeders near her apple at the back door, I moved a feeder down the garden into a big maple. She has followed it and a new male has moved onto her apple, which is also regularly visited by a Fieldfare and yesterday a Mistle Thrush. At least 5 Blackcaps have been here recently.

3 Yellowhammer (a male and 2 females) visited the seed put out on the 'lawn' off and on all day today. A Redwing, 14 Blackbirds, 3 Song Thrush, 3 GS Woodpeckers, Nuthatch, Marsh Tit were amongst the rest.

Jays dont affect the tits on my feeders but mine have reduced also. It may be the sparrowhawk that flashes through a couple of times a day collecting a tit on the way. I think he took a blackbird yesterday. At most times there are a dozen blackbirds, 6 robins [feathers flying as they defend territory] 2-4 GSW`s, nuthatches and tonight a tawny owl on the feeders!!
