Entry added by: Mr Peter Jackson on Sun 9th January 22, 11:35pm Sighting location: kenfig pool. Sighting date: 09/01/22
Appreciate out of area but if anyone interested there is a pacific loon and a Siberian Chiffchaff at Kenfig pool. Both stumbled on today as we have been promising ourselves a walk around the NNR for too many years. The loon was happily amongst the major raft of ducks and the chiffchaff by the south hide. A great 5 mile or so walk around the reserve only spoilt by the scrambling motor bikes !!

Entry added by: Mark Spirito on Sun 9th January 22, 07:23pm Sighting location: Usk Reservoir. Sighting date: 9/1/22
A search round Usk Reservoir for Marks Hawfinches proved negative, but good views of Crossbills were had with birds calling and singing, up to 15, also several Willow Tits seen, and paired up, 2 Chiffchaffs, a Woodcock flushed near the old bird hide, 4 Tufted Duck on the water and single Drake Goldeneye, small numbers of Mallard and Cormorant , 3 LBB Gulls.Stonechat and Reed Buntings near the House

Entry added by: Mike Warburton on Sun 9th January 22, 05:58pm Sighting location: Halfway/Crychan Forest. Sighting date: 08/01/22
Several flocks of Crossbill ranging from just 2 birds up to 14. The flock of 14 included three juveniles `wing flapping` and begging an adult male for food. Also of note were the begging calls of chicks from a static point in a mature Larch so a probable active nest. Not much else of note other than some Jays and the odd Winter Thrush.

3 dead Brambling in the garden (2 today). Looks like a bad year for Brambling but starvation or avian flu ?

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Fri 7th January 22, 07:29pm Sighting location: Usk Reservoir / Llangorse Lake. Sighting date: 07/01/22
Another look around Usk Reservoir gave 17 Crossbill in groups of 10/5/2, a charm of 20 Goldfinch, 6 male Bullfinch and Willow Tit's calling from two areas. On the way back some bird feeders at Portis Filter Station had a remarkable 50 Blue Tit feeding at the same time with just a few Great and Coal Tit. This evening 36 Common Gull and a Yellow-legged Gull were in the roost at Llangorse where the duck numbers seem to have dropped dramatically again.
