Curlew Tretower area 01/04/23 Andrew King BINGO - got good views of the pair today.'Black 18' & metal BTO ring on rt leg/orange plastic ring above the left knee. Its mate is unringed. This bird (probable male) had been seen at Llangasty Point 10 days ago, and possibly at Llangorse some weeks before that. Great to trace one of these c/r Curlew back to its breeding territory. I completely missed the birds there last summer.
Curlew Llangasty Point 21/03/23 Andrew King White inscription '18' on black ring (rt leg), and orange/yellow plastic ring on left leg. Flew in at 5pm with 5 other Curlew. Returned to Llangorse Lake for its 5th spring to feed up prior to breeding at unknown location. Ringed at Gann Estuary, Dale, Pembs on 20/1/18, to where it returns to winter each year.
Curlew Llangorse Lake 15.03.23 Mark Waldron Yellow on right with metal below, White "53" on left. Previously seen at Llangorse Lake 15/05/21. It wintered 21/22 and 22/23 along the Severn estuary at Guscar Rocks and Aylburton Warth which are close together on the west bank of the Severn estuary, downstream from the release point at Slimbridge. Quite a number of the surviving head-started birds winter there. This Curlew was released on 10/07/2019 at an age of 45 days after being hatched at Slimbridge as part of a programme to rescue eggs from RAF airfields where the nests would otherwise have been destroyed. This is part of the Slimbridge WWT head start programme. The idea is that these birds would stay in the Slimbridge area and add to the local breeding population.
Mute Swan Crannog, Llangorse Lake 12.03.23 Mark Waldron Z43794 This bird was ringed by the Llangorse Ringing Group in January 2012 and is only one of two Mute Swan's ringed by the group since 1990. Also seen here 27.12.21.
Curlew Crannog, Llangorse Lake 05.03.23 Mark Waldron Red / Black 18. Back for it's fifth spring. Also present 12.03.23.
Oystercatcher Crannog, Llangorse Lake 05.03.23 Mark Waldron Metal, "FH18263". FH18263 was on the Acorn jetty 05.03.23 with 3 unringed birds. This bird was ringed by Wash Wader Ringing Group as age at least 2 years in immature plumage, sex unknown on 11.08.10 at Wainfleet Marsh, Lincolnshire. The ring was also read at Llangorse Lake 29.03.18 which was the first report since it was ringed, and part read there 02.03.22. This history confirms what has been reported in the "Breconshire Birds" annual reports. In the 2009 report it was noted that there were no "summering or confirmed breeding" reports. It would seem likely that this bird summered between Llangorse Lake and Scethrog in 2010 and then was reported as the bird "with a metal ring on right leg" in 2011 & 2012 before attracting a mate in 2013 but making an unsuccessful breeding attempt, 1 fledged young 2014, 1 in 2015, 2 possibly 3 in 2016, a failed attempt in 2017, 1 fledged from 3 chicks in 2018, failed attempts in 2019 & 2020, 1 fledged young 2021 and 2 in 2022.
