Sighting location: Brecknockshire Boundary. Sighting date: 29/12/09
I've been away for a week, [ and live out of (political) county but within vc42 at Gilwern ], so haven't really followed the discussion, and anyway don't know whether Brecknockshire Birders uses VC or current political boundaries or something different again. . . Gwent has changed its recording boundary so often, particularly east of Cardiff, that I've lost track of what they do now. . . West of Rhayader the VC boundary does follow the river up to and through the reservoirs, presumably following the old river course. . . Knowing the VC boundary there is important, as in so many places with interesting spiders, as indeed there are some rare spiders in that neck of the woods. . . The old political (pre-Powys) boundary does indeed leave the river to exclude the village - as well as climb the hillside to exclude Cnwch Wood - and more from "Breconshire". . . The VC county is Brecon or Brecknockshire according to the Ray Society's map - "Watsonian Vice Counties of Great Britain".

Sighting location: SN91. Sighting date: 28/12/09
22 species within SN91A today. BTO ATLAS birding made difficult by incessant (but tourist attracting) racket of the continuous line of waterfalls that runs through this tetrad. 8 species on Comin y Rhos (SN9109) in 30 minutes. I'm fairly sure this square is all Breconshire and will be added as such to the BTO ATLAS.
Not sure what to do about Glasbury, but one possible solution is to declare this area an island in the same way that Hay is independent ("thinking out of box")?

Sighting location: Dolymynach Res. Sighting date: 28/12/09
Goldeneye - 10 (3 males). The birds were technically in the Breconshire part of the lake - but probably swim between both counties.
A mismatch between old vice county and modern day boundary also occurs in the north of the county. Should I take it as the Elan River (In which case Brecon gets a Hawfinch in 2006) or the modern boundary that runs along the road and excludes Elan Village?

Sighting location: Glasbury area. Sighting date: 27/12/09
Pete's reference to the County Boundary around Glasbury is quite correct. He refers to the Vice-County 42 (Breconshire) boundary which runs a convoluted course around south Glasbury. The map on this website and in all published editions of Bird Reports shows the bird recording area boundary as the River Wye. This has simplified bird records-taking over the last 50 years or so in this small area. Bird Recording Areas do not necessarily follow VC boundaries (cf the big areas of south VC42 within Glam and Gwent bird recording areas), and until a UK-wide edict is introduced, there are no plans to change this. Recording of other phyla has traditionally followed VC boundaries.

Sighting location: glasbury. Sighting date: 26/12/09
there is the common error on the county boundary map and the site entry for Glasbury.the border leaves the river for some 2km below glasbury bridge and for a few hundred metres above to go around glasbury to the south. see nbn website for vc boundaries or I have large scale maps for anyone doing wildlife recording in that area.
