Entry added by: John Harper on Fri 8th January 10, 08:54pm Sighting location: Llanddetty Church. Sighting date: 08/01/10
Active squirrel in Llanddetty Churchyard this afternoon - warmer right by the R.Usk again ?

Entry added by: John Harper on Fri 8th January 10, 08:37pm Sighting location: Llangenny and Llanddetty Churches. Sighting date: 08/01/10
What lovely weather to be out and about - a bit nippy though. While recording churchyard Yews - a few birds noticed: - - - Wren and Nuthatch calling at Llangenny Church SO23991815 - - - Wren calling at Llanddetty Church SO12782023 while several Mallard quacking on the R.Usk just below. An attempt to go up to Talybont Resr. (van 2-WD only) was thwarted by the steep icy slope up to the canal bridge - suggested unhealthy driving beyond. School bus roads seem to be given priority for clearing and gritting.

The cold weather brought X2 Song Thrushes - one got away with a snails shell but I am doubtful on its fruitful contents. X1 Red Kite perched for sometime in a tree just off the Ffrwdgrech Woodland, a wonderful sighting. But todays little treat was to hand feed a 'Blue Tit' from my window.

Entry added by: Graham Evans on Fri 8th January 10, 03:00pm Sighting location: Llwyniago Farm, Libanus. Sighting date: 07/01/10
6 Lapwings flying parallel with the A470 (northwards) at lunchtime.

Just over county border in Carmarthenshire. Over 20 wrens feeding along the south facing bank/undergrowth. very unusual behavior, persistantly flying to my feet. One Wren casualty to a preditor on the beach.

Just a little snowfall is enough to keep people off work ! . . . 10 messages today - - is this a record ? . . . Interestingly Powys roads have been cleared considerably better than in Monmouthshire - - the worst I had to contend with were in my middle "end" estate in downvillage Gilwern - - right outside my door.

Entry added by: Rose Gibbons on Thu 7th January 10, 08:45pm Sighting location: Llanigon. Sighting date: 07/01/10
Today in Llanigon,1 red kite,1 buzzard,12 bullfinches,14 lapwings ,1 green sandpiper,2 dippers plus the usual at the feeders

Entry added by: John Harper on Thu 7th January 10, 07:40pm Sighting location: Pwll y wrach. Sighting date: 07/01/10
Clive, your squirrel may be sleeping off your generous offerings of Christmas fare in its drey today as it was particularly cold last night. . . However I did see an active squirrel in a warmer garden by the River Usk today.

Entry added by: Clive Micklewright on Thu 7th January 10, 07:16pm Sighting location: Arosfa, Pwll y wrach. Sighting date: 07/01/10
Dozens of blackbirdsand thrushes [both] coming out of Pwll y wrach to feed. Redwing on my feeder. Interestingly squirrels have disappeared. Few birds but a lovely walk through Pwll y wrach--the big waterfall is 50% frozen with huge icicles

Entry added by: John Harper on Thu 7th January 10, 06:56pm Sighting location: Tetrad SO11U (East Llangynidr). Sighting date: 07/01/10
Ideal time for a tetrad bash - it's meant to be a winter count isn't it ? ! - - 1st hour along the river and canal; and the 2nd up the hill to 290m and back produced far fewer birds - - 29 species altogether - - including - 11 Great Tit, 32 Blue Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 2 Marsh Tit, 30 L-t Tit, 5 Nuthatch, 3 Treecreeper, 2 Coldcrest, 16 Robin, 7 Wren, only 2 Dunnock, 26 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush but no Fieldfare or Redwing, 17 Rook cawing at their rookery, 5 Raven, all of 4 Wood Pigeon, 5 Chaffinch, 7 Goldfinch and 3 Bullfinch. . . Also 2 Dipper, 1 Goosander -- and 3 Mallard on the river as the canal was frozen over.
