Entry added by: John Lloyd on Tue 14th May 19, 09:58am Sighting location: Llyn Brianne. Sighting date: 13/05/19
Whilst I am in the habit of posting on here, I have a string of 20 nestboxes on the Brecknock shores of Llyn Brianne. Last year all the boxes were occupied, 11 of them by by Pied Flys. The mean number of youg produced was 6.1 per nest, quite outstanding given the altitude of more than 300 metres and the predominantly northerly facing aspect. I regularly find sitting females with other rings on them, some from Abergwesyn but also from the Dinas Gwenffrwd reserves. There almost seems to be a "high Elenydd" sub-population of Pied Flys because I never get any Dinas birds here at home which is the same sort of distance away. seems Redstarts seem adverse to nesting in boxes in sessile oak woods but there were two pairs in natural holes last year. I made the first visit this year testerday. Again all boxes are occupied, this time an even more satistactory 14 Pied Flys. Laying is going on at the moment with only two possibly on complete clutches. The height and aspect does make this a late site. I also watches a Tree pipit back onto its clutch of 5 eggs and fluked a Skylark with 4 eggs on the walk over the top back to the car. Coupled with a Pied Wag nest in a paint pot in the shepherding hut, it was a good afternoon., A pair of Mallard was on the reservoir nearby and a Common Sandpiper flew along the shoreline whilst I was walking between the boxes.
