Pair of Spotted Flycatchers nesting on the house after apparent total absence of several years; back in precisely the traditional site.

Two Cuckoos today seen and heard from the south end of Buckland Hill. A male was calling across from Tor-y-foel, and another was silent and stirring up the Tree Pipits on Buckland. The pipits were not shy, making physical strikes on the back of the Cuckoo's head as it flew.

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Fri 24th May 19, 10:00pm Sighting location: Fforest Lodge. Sighting date: 24/05/19
39 species during a breeding bird survey near Forest Lodge gave 3 male Cuckoo and a "bubbling" female. Single singing Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher were pleasing but just one territory of Stonechat and no Whinchat seemed too low. Other territories included 3 Tree Pipit, 40 Meadow Pipit, 10 Skylark, 10 Redstart, 14 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcap and singles of Wheatear, Garden Warbler, Redpoll and Green Woodpecker.

A UK 'Lifer' for us both this morning as we walked the edge of our neighbours barley field, (With Permission)!!! We got to within ten feet of the previously posted singing Quail. It was great to hear it making little noises up close, then the classic 'Wet my Lips call'. We thought that was it but it then took flight from in front of us, great to see one of these elusive birds.

Possible Osprey near top of pines on Beacons Res Island seen distantly from the bus at 7:50 so I can’t be sure.

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Wed 22nd May 19, 09:17pm Sighting location: Llangorse Lake. Sighting date: 22/05/19
A quick drop in to Llangasty this evening gave 2 summer plumage Dunlin on the point with a Shelduck and a pair of Tufted Duck. A brood of 7 cygnet were on the lake by the crannog.

As Mark S has also found Spotted Flycatchers are back, seemingly in better numbers. Over the last 24hrs I have had three birds in two territories in Wyeside woods at Hay, a pair in Pennorth, and singles in Llangasty and Brecon. In some years it can be a struggle to find these birds until they are feeding young.

A Quail singing loudly in a barley field at the bottom of my garden early this morning - at times quite close. It kept singing until Andrew arrived, so good to share a rare event. There is no access to the field and frustratingly no chance of seeing the bird in amongst winter barley which is two foot high. Typically the singing has died off after late morning but may start again later this evening. Early morning and late evening/dusk being prime singing times.
