Low numbers of just 25 species around the reservoir and Glysfynydd Forest this morning. The Great Grey Shrike was seen briefly at the top of a pine edge by the clearfell at SN827275. Other hightlights were 2 Crossbill, a calling Willow Tit, 1 Kestrel and 2 Goldeneye. Later a walk along Camlais Brook gave 8 Snipe, 1 Water Rail, 4 Mallard, 1 Meadow Pipit and 2 Reed Bunting.

Marsh Tit showing territorial behaviour near canal boatyard, Llangynidr on 6th Jan. Also of note, a Common Sandpiper on the Usk just downstream of vice-county boundary near Llanwenarth today.

A great afternoons birding on a Round Robin. Mynydd Illtyd, c40 Golden Plover loath to fly despite dog walkers in close proximity.. Llangorse. Kingfisher and 3 Water Rail directly in front of the hide. Gadwall, Pochard, Goldeneye, Teal, Wigeon, Tufted in good numbers but no Pintail noted. Llangasty. 2 Great White Egret. Lower Llangynidr Garden. Tits, Blue 33, Great 10, LT 17, Coal 3, Marsh 1. GSpWoodpecker 2, Nuthatch 2, Goldfinch, 9,Siskin 3, H Sparrow 14, Chaffinch 21, Dunnoch 4, Bullfinch 2 males,Robin 1, Blackbird 5,Pied Wagtail 1.

7 Greenfinch on our feeders yesterday was lovely to see. We barely had any between 2010 and 2015, they are now gradually returning.

Six bullfinch feeding around the hide ramp. GW egret visible from car park. Masses of duck in fron t of the hide, including a couple of (not-so-common) pochard and a dozen goldeneye

Late afternoon on Wednesday, fifteen Red Kite together in close proximity soaring into a strong headwind. Also, two separate pairs around Pencelli.

No finches at all around the groves. Highlights were a Marsh Tit, 2 Treecreeper, a male Sparrowhawk and singles of Dipper, Grey Wagtail and Nuthatch. 2 Stock Dove flew over Slwch Farm

Tawny Owls very vocal around the house this evening .
